Week 12 - Work on Final Presentations

In Weeks 10 and 11 students decided on the topic for their final presentation. In Week 12 they researched the topic and, most probably, decided on the main points they would like to cover in their speech.

In Week 13 it is time for them to start practicing talking about their topic. What are the activities students can engage in to be able to start practicing making presentations and get feedback from their teachers and fellow students?

  1. They should already be practicing different techniques with their comm teacher each week. Example: Projection, short 1 minute about themselves, 2 minute hobby, making a simple ppt and having teacher gear them in the right direction to present. Show and tell about an item they bring in from home, could be a piece of equipment they use for example in their major. Have them describe in front of the class a general object like a pen. Have them video themselves and then watch and critique in class to help with pronunciation, body language, organization, and basic video presentation ability. Etc.

  2. students should be grouped in pairs to practice the dialogue that they have prepared. students should peer-correct each other so they could identify mistakes. students in groups could also review any powerpoint presentations and get feedback as to what they need to amend or add to for maximum effect.

  3. I give the students questions to think about it research regarding their topics and give them time in the module class to complete them. This way they are forced to gather more information and ponder about what they are going to talk about. I will continue to add general research questions for the class and specific individuals as the weeks go on.

  4. Students have chosen topics that they know about. They will be doing practice presentations on topics they are doing weekly. As they do this they will use the same skills like research making an introduction getting pictures and information and making a conclusion of their main presentation.

  5. They can prepare a short presentation of what they have prepared so far and teacher/students can then provide feedback.

  6. Students should start by preparing an outline for their presentation. It should be separated into categories, introduction, main points to including opinion for or against with supporting evidence.

There should be a clear conclusion summarising the presentation.

An outline at this stage will help students to structure a sussinct presentation.

  7. Students will go in to groups of 4 and help each other to begin their presentation on paper, if any student has a problem, they will ask their group for help. Eventually everything should be on paper for practise
