50 TVTC colleges to use English for training programs | Arab News
The state-owned Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) announced here on Tuesday that English will be the medium of instruction for trainees at all its institutions.
TVTC has 50 colleges and training institutes scattered across the Kingdom in partnership with high-caliber global universities, including those of the US, the UK, Canada and Australia.
“This strategy being offered by TVTC is in response to the needs of the labor market in the Kingdom,” said a source from the organization.
He said English will be taught as the medium of instruction for all subjects in its 33 Colleges of Excellence (CoE) and 21 institutes in partnership with the private sector.
“TVTC is keen to teach English to the trainees (males and females) in colleges and technical institutes to increase their chances for employment after graduation and enable them to compete for jobs in specialized areas,” said TVTC spokesman Fahd Al-Otaibi.

Saudi students will get ample opportunities to shine, as the Technical
and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) has announced the launch of
28 centers.
The centers, to be set up in TVTC-affiliated colleges and
institutes, will seek to discover budding talent among the trainees,
TVTC spokesman Fahd Al-Otaibi said on Sunday.
“These students will be supported all the way from germination of ideas to their implementation with technical advice and other kind of support,” he said.
It will also enable Saudis to take part in international competitions and
exhibitions on innovation, said Al-Otaibi. “TVTC participated last year
with 20 innovative projects in three international competitions — The
42nd Geneva Exhibition of Inventions, ITEX14 Exhibition of Inventions in
Malaysia and the IENA (International Trade Fair Ideas) Germany.”
In Geneva, the Saudi team won two gold medals and four bronze medals, six
gold medals and two silver in Malaysia, and a gold, a silver and four
bronze medals in Germany, said Al-Otaibi.
“This would help them in adopting distinctive innovations, as part of an integrated project that includes all units in all regions of the kingdom” he said.
The TVTC will be providing those students actual and theoretical programs and
innovative educational support, which would help them convert their idea
into reality.The centers will also work to identify and discover
excellence and creativity among trainees in technical and vocational
fields, said Al-Otaibi.
This will be in addition to the competition
and exhibition of technical innovations organized by TVTC annually,
during which valuable prizes are given to distinguished winners.
The TVTC also helps students in gaining access to international events.'

A tale of wisdom by an autistic teen

RIYADH – “Wisdom of the Five-Pointed Star,” is a tale of wisdom from a 15-year-old autistic teen, Muneera Al-Muheish.
The book authored and illustrated by Muneera was launched at the Riyadh International Book Fair, Saturday.
The book, the first by the author, centers around an argument between two characters: The square and the rectangle and a resolution by the book’s hero, the five-pointed star.
“The idea for the book came to me during an assignment given to me by my teacher, Miss Amal Hamdan, for my math class,” said Muneera.

Recently, some local Arabic newspapers reported that some Saudi families had registered strong complaints about a Saudi university’s including inappropriate pictures and the components of Western culture in selected English textbooks. This, again, revives the controversial issue of teaching the English language along with or without the English culture in which it operates. As a result, educational stakeholders who are responsible for English programs, especially in the higher education sector, mandate that international publishing companies produce what are called Middle Eastern English textbook versions for use in the Kingdom.
